A year ago, whilst scouting the route, I made up my mind: I absolutely should not take people here. The first day was brilliant, no issues whatsoever. The second one, however, was one big issue. And given that it’s mountainous terrain and conditions vary from year to year, there are bound to be surprises.

A lot of fun. Think about it.
On the first day, we’ll hike along the ridge from the Baghavachkhosghele Pass to the highest point of the route—Mount Arkhoti (3,172 m)—and on to the lake. If you love panoramic mountain views, you’ll find them all here. It’s stunning right from the start of the route.

We spend the night in tents at an altitude of 2,250 metres, surrounded by sheer fjords and on the shore of a heart-shaped lake.
On the second day, we’ll head down from the lake through the gorge to the border post — beyond the mountain lies Ingushetia. And yes, you’ll need to bring your passport for registration.

We’ll be walking alongside a very turbulent mountain river all day. There used to be a path there, but it gets washed away from time to time or becomes overgrown. In short, it’s not going to be an easy day. You’ll need mental and physical strength.
  • 38 km, ↑1270m ↓2500m
On the first day, we’ll cover 18 kilometres, ascending 700 metres and descending 1,400 metres; on the second day, we’ll cover 20 kilometres, ascending 300 metres and descending 800 metres.

Technically, the route isn’t particularly difficult, but the trail on the second day has a few surprises in store: grass, narrow and steep sections, and flies.
  • Night in tents
On the lakeshore, with the sound of the waterfall in the background, at an altitude of 2,250 metres. We cook our meals on a camping stove.
Our plan
18th, Saturday
Tbilisi – Baghavachkhosghele Pass – Mount Arkhoti – Lake Tanie
18 km, ↑700m ↓1400m
We leave Tbilisi in the morning. A scenic route awaits us across the Zhinvali Reservoir to the village of Roshka, tucked away in the mountains, and then even higher up to the Baghavachkhosghele Pass. That is where our trek begins.

As soon as we step off the minibus, the panoramic view of Khevsureti will unfold before us. We’ll unpack, get dressed, take a group photo and set off.

During the day, we’ll walk along the ridge and gradually make our way up to the summit of Mount Arkhoti. Around lunchtime, we’ll begin our descent into the gorge towards Lake Tanie. Those feeling particularly keen can take a dip.
19th, Sunday
Lake Tanie – Arkhoti village – Tbilisi
20 km, ↑300m ↓800m
In the morning, we’ll enjoy a delicious breakfast, soak up the cool morning air, pack up camp and continue our descent through the gorge.

We’ll need to register at the border post — so make sure you bring your passport or a residence permit.

After the border post, the trail follows a fast-flowing mountain river and, to be honest, it’s impossible to say exactly what it will be like. Depending on the weather, it could be fairly easy or almost impassable. This is the main challenge of the whole route.

In any case, we’ll make our way to the end of the route, hop on the transfer, have a beer/coke/juice at a local café, and then head to Tbilisi.
